How to check if your brand appears in ChatGPT

More buyers now ask an AI assistant for recommendations instead of scrolling a results page. So a fair question for any brand is: when someone asks ChatGPT about our category, do we get named? Here’s how to check it properly — and why one quick look will mislead you.

1. Ask the question a buyer would ask — not your brand name

Don’t type “What does [your brand] do?” — of course it knows. Instead ask the neutral question a prospect would ask, with no brand mentioned: “Who are the best [category] providers for [need]?” or “What are the top-rated [category] companies?” Then read the answer and see whether your brand (or your client’s) shows up, and which competitors are named.

2. Run it several times — answers vary

ChatGPT’s answers aren’t identical run to run. Ask the same question a handful of times. If a brand appears in 4 of 5 answers, that’s meaningful; appearing once might be noise. The signal is the rate, not a single result.

3. Use the browsing/search mode where it matters

A model answering from memory isn’t the same as one searching the live web. For questions where recency matters, use the search-enabled mode so you see what a buyer with live results would see — including the sources it cites.

4. Track competitors and the trend

Presence on its own is half the picture. Note which competitors get named for the same questions (share of voice), and check again next month so you can see whether you’re gaining or losing ground.

The catch: doing this by hand doesn’t scale

For one brand and one question, manual checking is fine. For several clients, multiple questions, repeated sampling, and a month-over-month trend, it becomes hours of work and inconsistent notes — with nothing client-ready at the end. That’s the gap CiteWatch fills: it runs a fixed question set across multiple assistants, samples each, and turns it into a white-label monthly report.
