How to report AI-search visibility to clients

Clients are starting to ask: “Do we show up in ChatGPT?” If your reporting only covers Google rankings, you don’t have an answer. Here’s how to turn AI-search visibility into a clear monthly deliverable your clients understand — and one you can bill for.

Measure three things

  • Presence: across the major assistants (ChatGPT, Perplexity, and others), for a fixed set of buyer questions, is the client mentioned?
  • Share of voice: for those same questions, how often is the client named versus each competitor?
  • Trend: how did presence and share of voice move since last month?

Present it simply

Lead with one headline number (“mentioned by 3 of 5 assistants this month, up from 2”), then the competitor comparison, then a short, prioritized “do these three things” list. Clients don’t need the raw transcripts — they need the trend and the next action.

Be honest about how it works

AI answers vary between runs, so report trends and rates, not a single snapshot — and say so. A short methodology note builds trust and heads off the “isn’t this random?” question. Don’t promise a specific ranking; promise measurement and improvement over time.

Make it a billable line item

Because the report is recurring and tied to a question clients now care about, it slots cleanly into an existing retainer as a new line. The value compounds: the trend is only useful if you keep measuring, so it’s naturally recurring rather than one-off.

Don’t build the monitoring yourself

Querying multiple assistants, sampling each question, detecting mentions, and formatting a report — every month, per client — is a lot of manual work. CiteWatch does it and outputs a white-label report under your agency’s logo, so your clients only ever see your brand.
